STC 2008 Annual Report
The Saskatchewan Transportation Company (STC) today released its 2008 Annual Report,
highlighting the following:
- Opening of the new passenger and express terminal in Regina;
- New bus service to La Loche, Buffalo Narrows, Île-à-la Crosse, Beauval
and Green Lake - the first significant expansion of service in over 30 years;
- All coaches fuelling in Regina and Saskatoon began operating on a two-percent canola
biodiesel blend;
- Operating subsidy was reduced to $6.2 million from the budgeted amount of $7.0 million;
- Ridership declined slightly by one percent from 2007; and
- Passengers gave the Company an 89 percent satisfaction rating.
"The Government of Saskatchewan supports STC's commitment to deliver passenger service
on a broad basis, now reaching more than 280 Saskatchewan communities," Crown Corporations
Minister Ken Cheveldayoff said.
In 2008, STC carried 270,002 passengers, generated $7.3 million in parcel express
business and purchased $18 million in Saskatchewan in support of the provincial
economy.
Cheveldayoff also noted that a benefit of intercity bus transportation is that it
displaces numerous private vehicles travelling on provincial highways, thereby reducing
greenhouse gas emissions. "STC is also an investment in our environment," he added.
Looking forward, STC President and CEO, Ray Clayton indicated that the Company is
taking a number of measures to increase the attractiveness of bus travel. "For our
new full size coaches, we are increasing leg room and adding AC power outlets and
fold-down tables for those who wish to use lap-top computers while en-route. Along
the Regina-Saskatoon corridor, we will soon offer Wi-Fi internet access as well,"
he said.
Clayton also noted that throughout the year, STC will be offering discounted seat
sales on selected routes and on selected days of the week.
"We remain committed to our passengers, our parcel express customers, our employees,
our environment and the communities we serve," he concluded.
