STC Expands Service in Northern Saskatchewan

Effective November 19, 2008, the Saskatchewan Transportation Company (STC) will start to operate new passenger and freight service to the northern communities of La Loche, Buffalo Narrows, Ile-a-la-Crosse, and Beauval with connections through Prince Albert.

"This service expansion shows STC's commitment to building a stronger Saskatchewan and better life for Saskatchewan's northern citizens," Crown Corporations Minister Ken Cheveldayoff said. "These communities, their citizens and businesses operating in the area will now have a new intercity transportation and shipping option."

The new route was created by fostering joint venture business arrangements with the private sector in these northern communities. The bus services will be operated by local entrepreneur Mr. Larry Young and four new agencies have been established in the communities of La Loche, Buffalo Narrows, Ile-a-la-Crosse and Beauval. Service will operate four times a week (Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday).

The large and growing population in this area was the main contributing factor to establishing the new service. Compared to 2001, the total population along this route has grown by 6 per cent as reported by Statistics Canada in its 2006 Census. The last significant route expansion was in 1978 between Prince Albert and Creighton, which continues to operate today.

The Highway Traffic Board granted Operating Authority to STC to serve these communities on September 22, 2008. STC now connects 282 Saskatchewan communities… bringing Saskatchewan people together.
