STC's New Terminal Now Open in Regina

The Saskatchewan Transportation Company (STC) officially opened its new Regina passenger and freight terminal today.

"The new facility is part of STC's long-term commitment to provide high quality services to its customers and a better workplace for its employees. It has better security, lighting and improved accessibility," states Ray Clayton, President & CEO of STC. When compared to its former building, some of the most significant enhancements include:

  • Better accessibility for people with disabilities;
  • A secure travelling environment for passengers with an enclosed and restricted passenger loading area;
  • A more comfortable passenger waiting and loading area;
  • A secure and enclosed freight loading area;
  • A new Robins Donuts with 75% increased seating capacity and new menu to better serve passengers;
  • More energy efficient - designed to exceed the model national energy code by 35%;
  • A safe and functional work environment for employees.

The building also contains some of the most state-of-the-art technology in computerization, including security, communications and building systems. The passenger hall is the focal point of the interior and was the centerpiece in the design. "The arched ceilings emulate the three dimensional arched shape of the covered wagons and larger historic railway stations that first brought settlers to this province," says Architect Brian Saunders, President of Saunders Evans Plosker Wotherspoon Architects Inc. "We used contemporary construction materials that give the building a 21st century look, but also used elements from our history, connecting the past to the future."

Similar to the Regina International Airport, STC's new bus terminal is a renewed point of entry into Saskatchewan's capital city. 'We hope to leave a welcoming and memorable impression with all tourists and visitors when they enter our province by bus," says Clayton.

The total cost of the new facility was $26.2 million.
